Mathematics
Welcome to the Mathematics Department area of our website. Below are a few general details of our organisation. For Key Stage-specific information please click on the relevant header on the left.
Aims and objectives of the Mathematics Department
We aim to give all students a thorough and sound mathematical education, enabling each to achieve their full potential and appreciate the usefulness, power and necessity of mathematics.
In order to achieve these aims we try to ensure that each and every student:
• encounters mathematics in a variety of situations, both abstract and real, and can employ a variety of methods (mental, written, calculator-based, computer-based, practical) as appropriate to tackle and solve problems;
• can work independently or co-operatively on a problem with confidence and enjoyment, and enquire into new or unfamiliar situations in a logical way drawing valid and reasoned conclusions;
• can apply their mathematical ideas verbally, in writing and using diagrams as appropriate;
• can apply their mathematics in everyday situations, thus realising and appreciating that it is a living applicable subject;
• will be supported if experiencing difficulties and receive extended material if it will benefit them.
Functional Mathematics
Hemel Hempstead School is part of a national pilot scheme for Functional Skills, which becomes a separately examined element for Mathematics from 2010, and an integral part of the KS3 National Curriculum from September 2008. As a department we have always put emphasis on linking mathematics to ‘real life’ so we have only needed to make minimal adjustments to our schemes of work. That said, we have developed a programme of lessons after end-of-year exams for Years 7, 8 & 9 where the students experience the relevance of mathematics via topic-based projects.
Use of ICT in Mathematics
As a department we make extensive use of technology to enhance our teaching and learning. All classrooms have interactive whiteboards and there are numerous software packages available to both staff and students. Where possible whole classes have mathematics lessons in an ICT suite.
Student equipment
We expect all students to be equipped at all times with sufficient equipment (pen, pencil, protractor, ruler, eraser, scientific calculator). All items are available for sale at Student Resources at competitive prices.
