Paper 1: Section A: The Cold War 75 marks 1¾ Hours 37.5%
 
Candidates should answer 2 of the 3 questions set. Each question will have 4 sub-sections and will include one or two sources. Questions will test objective 6.1 (ability to recall, select, organise and deploy knowledge) and objective 6.2 (ability to analyse, evaluate and interpret sources).
 
Section B: Britain in the Second World War
 
Candidates to answer one question (no choice). The question will include about four sources and four sub-questions and will test objectives 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3 (interpretations of History).
 
Paper 2 75 marks 1¾ hours 37.5%
 
This paper is in two sections, A and B. It will test national history in depth studies on The USA 1919 – 1941 and Germany 1918 – 1939
 
Section A: Answer one of four structured questions on the USA or Germany. Each question will have about 4 sources and 5 sub-questions. All objectives will be tested.
Section B: Answer one of four questions but on a different country from that chosen in section A. Marks will be weighted towards objective 6.1
 
Coursework: 25%
One assignment will test objective 6.1 and the other will test objectives 6.2 and 6.3.

  1. The USA: 1919 – 1941: Depression and New Deal
Topics include:
    • The end of the First World War and policy of isolationism
    • The economic boom of the 1920s
    • The causes and consequences of the Wall Street Crash
    • Roosevelt and the New Deal
 
  1. The Battle of Gallipoli (course work)
Topics include:
· The causes of the battle
· The main events including the role of ANZAC troops
· Reasons for allied failure.
 
 
 
  1. Weimar Germany 1919 – 1933
Topics include:
· The impact of the Treaty of Versailles
· The Weimar constitution
· Opposition to the Weimar Government
· Economic problems including hyper-inflation
· Economic and political recovery under Stresemann.
· The impact of the Wall Street Crash.
 
  1. Nazi Germany
Topics include :
· The rise of the Nazi Party and fascism
· The means by Hitler gained absolute power
· Life in Nazi Germany e.g. the treatment of women and children, anti-Semitism, censorship and propaganda.
· Economic achievements
· Opposition to the Nazis.
 
  1. Britain in the Second World War: key events
· The blitzkrieg of 1939-1940
· The Battle of Britain
· The war in the Atlantic
· D-day
· The last year of the war and surrender of Nazi Germany.
 
Pupils are offered the chance to participate in a visit to Munich in the last week of the summer term in order to enhance their understanding of European history 1923 – 1945.
 
YEAR 11
 
  1. Britain in the Second World War: The Home Front
Topics include:
Evacuation, the role of women in the war, rationing, responses to the blitz, the Home Guard, the use of propaganda and censorship.
 
 
  1. The Cold War
Topics include:
    • The causes of the Cold War
    • The opening events of the war – the division of Europe and establishment of the iron curtain, The Truman Doctrine, Marshall Aid.
    • The main flashpoints - The Berlin Airlift, The Korean War, The Hungarian Revolt, The Berlin Wall, The Cuban Missile Crisis, The Prague Spring, Solidarity and events in Poland in the 1970s
    • The arms race and arms reduction
    • Moves towards détente.
    • Changes in the USSR under Gorbachev and the end of the Cold War.
 
 
  1. The Vietnam War (course work)
Topics include:
· The causes of the war and reasons for American involvement.
· Guerrilla warfare
· The impact of the war on Vietnam and on the USA
· Reasons for American withdrawal.
