Key Stage 4

Curriculum and setting

We reduce the class size in KS4 by adding an extra set. In years 10 and 11 we follow the GCSE course for all sets. The exam is two-tier with the top four sets taking the Higher exam, sets five to eight taking the Foundation exam. The Higher exam allows students to achieve grades A* to D, the Foundation exam grades C to G. There is no coursework element to the exam.
From September 2009 we have changed the exam system to a modular arrangement. This means that in year 10 students will take GCSE modules in November and June, worth 50% of the final grade, with the other 50% being examined in year 11.
Sets one and eight will take the exam at the end of year 10, the rest will be examined at the end of year 11.

In year 11 set one will follow the Additional Mathematics free-standing qualification which prepares them for possible AS level mathematics and does attract UCAS points. Set eight follow an Additional Personal Finance course, which is a GCSE equivalent qualification.

Students are encouraged to develop their independent learning by taking more responsibility for their revision. To that end the Department offer the students the opportunity to purchase revision guides, published by CGP, at the beginning of year 10. These can be annotated as the course is delivered.
