Key Stage 3

Curriculum

The work in Years 7, 8 and 9 is based on the National Curriculum and National Framework for Mathematics. From September 2009, Year 7 will be following the Revised Curriculum encompassing functional skills and cross-curricular activity.

Students no longer formally sit Key Stage 3 SATS in Year 9 but we will use papers from previous years as their end of year assessment to help decide setting for GCSE and the appropriate level of entry.

Sets

Students are setted as soon as they enter Year 7; they are put into four sets within each half-year group. In Years 8 and 9 students are in seven straight sets. Students are tested half-termly to monitor progress and there are plenty of opportunities for promotion and demotion; every student is placed in the set that we believe will be in the best interests of the individual and the set.

Assessment

Students sit five half-termly tests followed by Assessment for Learning sessions with individual target setting. After end-of-year exams, the final half term is spent on a variety of projects and investigations developing mathematics in a real-life practical context.

Resources

Students attend 6 lessons a fortnight with the same subject teacher for all lessons. The school subscribes to the web-based ‘MyMaths’ interactive software as a teaching and learning tool in the classroom as well as for monitored online homework. Textbooks are issued and should be kept at home for the purpose of homework. Classwork is underpinned by two supporting homeworks a week of 20 – 30 minutes. Homework is checked once a week and books are taken in for marking at least once a fortnight.
